Bali Journal: Week 1

Bali Journal: Week 1

This first week has been hectic, sort of no surprise, as the travel and shoot modus all of us use, is deeply embedded at this point in my life.

We are staying on the outskirts of Ubud, off the beaten tourism path in the compound of a Balinese family and the home of A fascinating Yogi- fitness authority named Jocelyn Gordon. We did a little bit of motion capture for her website, Hoopyogini. Fun and she is quite elegant in every way (good subject)

Days are a series of time lapse projects, design meetings for Donna and Betty B with her various artisans located in and around Ubud. Time with the people we laughingly refer to as our super twinkly international friends who gather here on Bali from all over the world.

Life is good. Scary. Dangerous. Beautiful, Rote, yet unpredictable and full of all the intrigue and dark allure that is the magic behind the scenes of this Island itself. I always see and feel things here that are peculiar to the island. I sort of fit in that way. A puzzle piece in a tableau not everyone is aware of as existing.

I am building a pretty fantastic collection of time lapses as the Canon 70D is running day and night shooting in Small Raw format. That file size is absolutely perfect for time lapse work and the 7oD is the first camera I have used which utilizes this specialized format. Which really helps as my night shoots generally run 10 hours or so and are collecting approx 2k images per night. I am using a 2 battery booster which keeps power up with plenty to spare.

The 5DM2 is a workhorse. Still one of my favorite tools for high info stills ad motion capture. When combined with the 70D and it’s pretty good in camera mic you can actually sorta pull off good production values. I did not have space for a Lav or shotgun mic on this trip. Traveling with a single carry on and one check in bag. I am using a small Ravelli collapsible pod. Thing is great, but dangerous for full size DSLR’s and really is pushing the designed usage of the tripod doing what I do.

Off to East Bali and offline for a few days as we spend time with our friends there. Below are some mages from the week. Hope they make sense!
