The featured image this week is of my friend, designer Jenny Doll, deep into sword forms. When we endeavor to become at one with Nature, there is far more discipline, and exploration than one would at first glance, ever imagine to be required. We become it. It does not become us. This Winter season I began posting my daily weather homework which I have done for nearly 40 years, on to my Facebook page (David Pu’u Photography-Cinematography) The thing about Weather and Nature for Photographers who rely on the intersection of light atmospherics and ocean for their work, is that

So How is Your “A” Game?

There are points in every person’s career where the opportunity presents itself to do bar setting work that matters. It may only come around once, that opportunity. But for some artists, it seems to happen over and over and over again. I study those that exhibit this proclivity. This is what I have learned. Each one of those bright lights spends all their time not being the “star in the room” of the arena of their expertise. They are generally silent, in the corner, watching and listening. To everything. And they sort it all out. At the appropriate time, which

Risen

I typically dislike Bible based films for a large number of professional reasons (as a Cinematographer). So it was with rather low expectations that I sat in on a screening early this morning. This is possibly one of the best crafted motion pictures I have seen in awhile. It portrays a well known storyline, in a manner which is both relative to and believable by culture today. Every Department performed with near flawless precision and Senatore’s work as Cinematographer was just the right amount of stunning without overwhelming the storyline with hero shots. I was inspired on many levels. Here

Joy

Joy. It is a quirky subject. But for Artists, all strong and uplifting work comes from the place where joy resides. In the heart. If joy lives there. Well, guess what that does… When I was studying in Bible College, one of the most fascinating subjects was that of Joy. There is a scripture verse written on my heart that I frequently in life’s trials, find myself needing to refer to. “The joy of the Lord is your Strength”. You will see that tenet reflected everywhere in both the Old and New Testaments. I sometimes find myself shouting it inside

International Manifesto: A Child’s Game

Marin Havassy is the 6 YO daughter of two talented artists-creatives. Growing up in a world surrounded by art, nature, water, and an increasing immersion in Costa Rican culture, she emotionally and cognitively illustrates a point made to me by Jean-Michel Cousteau awhile ago: “If you want to change the world, begin with a conversation regarding the welfare of our children. Everyone cares about that. This is a conversation which I really want to have with the leaders of the world” This is a thread running through a dialog held in common we experienced, while visiting our ocean ohana this

Ocean Life and the Great White Shark

Ocean Life and the Great White Shark In recent months the reports of white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) activity in California have literally exploded in number, with videos, many of them shot from UAV (Drone) camera platforms, news articles and reports via the ocean community grapevine, indicating with little doubt, we have more of the species appearing in near shore waters than I can ever recall. So what is going on? The CDFW (California Department of Fish and Wildlife) lists the total number of “Incidents” in California waters between humans and the White since 1950 as 101. It is unclear what

Bali: dispatch 3

It is a curious experience, when you walk down a beach, and have a look around at your surroundings recognizing that it is coming up on the time to leave. The thought dawns: will I be in this place again? It is not an entirely comfortable feeling, this one. Especially when one connects to the place and it’s people. I doubt there is a place on this blue marble where I have explored, that has not left it’s mark on me or left a portion of it’s psychic presence upon my self. This after all, is what life is about:

Bali: Dispatch 2

When I land in a country, my modus typically consists of a calculated scramble to develop and capture content. It is rare to know in advance whether what one experiences right off the jet, is going to be a non repeatable event. So typically, I throw myself 100 percent into work immediately. Such was the case here this time on Bali. Indeed the featured image was shot within my first 20 minutes swimming a reef break off the coast of East Bali. I had not even met the surfer yet, but have since become friends with 18 year old Lempog

Bali: Outward Bound: Dispatch One

It was strange leaving California in the midst of a heat wave and unique Ocean and shooting conditions, which had kept me happily in the water for weeks sans wetsuit. Hard to walk away from that, But in the wee hours of a Tuesday morning, Donna and I departed LAX for Bali where we would once more touch base with friends who comprise the melange of talented artists, business people and change agents who base their lives around Bali. This is the first in a series of dispatches I will post on these few weeks we get to spend in

I have noticed a lot of confusion amongst my friends, who really are quite a diverse lot (and some not so simple to peg themselves, really). What confuses some of them? Me, apparently. There are things which I have little patience for, as I view some issues and how society approaches them via political process, as being rather childish by design. As I have matured, I determined to put aside childish things as well as inconvenient things, like following politicians or religious leaders who are in point of fact, just doing their jobs. (It is important to know just what
