The featured image this week is of my friend, designer Jenny Doll, deep into sword forms. When we endeavor to become at one with Nature, there is far more discipline, and exploration than one would at first glance, ever imagine to be required. We become it. It does not become us.
This Winter season I began posting my daily weather homework which I have done for nearly 40 years, on to my Facebook page (David Pu’u Photography-Cinematography) The thing about Weather and Nature for Photographers who rely on the intersection of light atmospherics and ocean for their work, is that over a period of time, you become a part of all of that, it is not something which you are separate from.
If you take the time to watch this talk from nature photographer Brian Shul, you will understand exactly how what I write about here, can function within a life. A friend of mine who is a former USMC pilot with a remarkable story of his own, sent it to me along with this note. “In Hebrew, shul translates as school. I think Brian has just schooled us all”. And the man does. Possibly the most poignant illustration of “being there” and documentary work that I have ever seen. His book is amazing.
For me a lot of the irony in the Shul story is that he speaks to the field of study my own Father was in, Defense Aerospace, and Nikon, and that is also how I came to operation of my first camera. It was my Father’s Army issue kit.
We become what we give ourselves to.

Just wow, David Puu. We become what we give ourselves to…I will be more mindful of that now, for certain.
